My very favorite thing about being a photographer – and I know I’ve mentioned this before – is seeing the families that I work with grow. I photographed the Agan/Oberfield family last fall, and when I saw their email in my inbox this summer asking about more family portraits this fall, I was so excited. Even more excited when they told me there was a new family member! This was my first time photographing a newborn along with a toddler, and I have to admit I was totally impressed with both kids. One of my favorite moments happened when we broke out a favorite book for story time. Having the family read a favorite story together was a great way to have everyone genuinely engaged with each other, and had the added benefit of capturing an active 2 year old’s attention for a few minutes! But hands down the absolute best moment of the day was after our session – as in mom and dad were getting packed up, baby was being buckled into the stroller, and my camera was turned off and inside my bag – and wouldn’t you know it, the second you leave a two year old to his own devices, he starts laughing and smiling and being ludicrously cute. He plopped himself down in a picturesque little area and proceeded to crack up and smile and giggle while staring directly at my camera. Because yes, I had my camera back out and my lens uncapped faster than you can imagine – genuine laughs and smiles from a toddler are pure gold. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this beautiful family – it’s been such a privilege and a pleasure to watch them grow!
